Level 1 – Lesson 1 : Introduction to the language and the course

It’s time to introduce yourself!

Now you’re ready to learn one of the most important skills in any language—introducing yourself!

In this part, you’ll learn how to:
✅ Ask someone’s name, age, country, and job
✅ Say where you’re from
✅ Tell a bit about yourself

✨ Essential Vocabulary

Here are the words you’ll see in this lesson:

Sinhala Script Romanization English Meaning
මම Mama I / me
ඔයා Oyaa you
ඔයාගෙ Oyaage your
එයා Eyaa he / she
එයාගෙ Eyaage his / her
මගේ Mage my
නම Nama name
රට Rata country
වයස Wayasa age
රස්සාව Rassaawa job / occupation
මොකද්ද Mokadhdha? what?
කීයද Kiiyadha? how much / what number?

Tip: To make something possessive, just add ge to the word.

  • ඔයා Oyaa = you
  • ඔයාගෙ Oyaage = your

You can add this with any words such as, names, English words etc. As long as it’s an animate noun (living thing), you can add it.

  • Shani → Shanige (Shani’s)

  • Doctor → Doctorge (Doctor’s)


🗣️ Asking & Answering Questions

Let’s look at the most common phrases step by step:

✨ 1. Asking Someone’s Name

Question:
ඔයාගෙ නම මොකද්ද?
(Oyaage nama mokadhdha?)
What is your name?

Answer:
මගේ නම ………
(Mage nama ………)
My name is ……

Example:
මගේ නම අමායා
(Mage nama Amaya)
My name is Amaya


✨ 2. Asking Where They’re From

Question:
ඔයාගෙ රට මොකද්ද?
(Oyaage rata mokadhdha?)
What is your country?

Answer:
මගේ රට (country)
(Mage rata ……)
My country is ……

Example:
මගේ රට ඇමරිකාව
(Mage rata Aemarikaawa)
My country is America

 

🎯 Even Better Way to Say Where You’re From

Use this pattern:
mama (country) + en
Change the last sound of the country to en

Examples:

Jarmaniya = Germany

Jermaniyen = from Germany

 

Kaenadaawa = Canada

Kaenadaawen = from Canada

 

  • මම ජර්මනියෙන්
    (Mama Jarmaniyen)
    I’m from Germany

  • මම කැනඩාවෙන්
    (Mama Kaendaawen)
    I’m from Canada

✨ 3. Asking Someone’s Age

Question:
ඔයාගෙ වයස කීයද?
(Oyaage wayasa kiiyadha?)
How old are you?

Answer (Option 1):
මගේ වයස (number) යි
(Mage wayasa … i)
My age is …

Answer (Option 2):
මට (number) යි
(Mata … i)
I am … years old

Example:
මගේ වයස විසි හතරයි
(Mage wayasa wisi hatharai)
My age is 24

OR

මට විසි හතරයි
(Mata wisi hatharai)
I am 24

✨ 4. Asking About Occupation

There are different ways ask this, let’s use the easiest one!

Question:
ඔයාගෙ රස්සාව මොකද්ද?
(Oyaage rassaawa mokadhdha?)
What is your job?

Answer (If you use the English word):
මම (job) කෙනෙක්
(Mama … kenek)

Example:
මම doctor කෙනෙක්
(Mama doctor kenek)
I am a doctor

Important Tip:
In Sri Lanka, it’s common to say their profession in English.
If you say it in Sinhala, you use a different sentence structure, which we’ll learn later.
