🌿 Part 1 – Introduction to Sinhala

What is Sinhala?
Sinhala is the main language spoken in Sri Lanka.

Two types of Sinhala:

  • Written Sinhala: Used in books, news, speeches, TV programs

  • Spoken Sinhala: Used in daily life (more casual and different vocabulary & grammar)

Example:
Written Sinhala – ආයුබෝවන්! (formal)
Spoken Sinhala – කොහොමද? (casual)

Custom Romanization System
You learned how we write Sinhala sounds with English letters for our resources.

Important Pronunciation Tips:

  • Double consonants must be pronounced clearly:

    • kana = කන (ear)
    • kanna = කන්න (to eat)

  • Long vowels:

    • a vs. aa

      • dhanawa දනවා (burning feeling)

      • dhaanawa දානවා (putting)

  • ae and e sounds:

    • ae = ඇ

      • kaemathii කැමතියි (like)
    • e = එ

      • mage මගෙ (mine)

Examples:

Sound Sinhala Example
a අම්මා (amma – mother)
aa ආවා (aavaa – came)
ae ඇඳ (aenda – bed)
aae ඈත (aaetha – far away)
e එන්න (enna – come)
ee ඒක (eeka – that one)

🌿 Part 3 – Greetings

Common Greetings:

Sinhala Romanization English
ආයුබෝවන් Aayuboowan Hello (formal)
කොහොමද? Kohomadha? Hello / How are you?
හොඳයි Hondhai Good
ස්තුතියි Sthuuthii Thank you
ගිහිං එන්නං Gihin ennan Goodbye
පස්සෙ හම්බ වෙමු Passe hamba wemu See you later

Example Conversation:
A: හෙලෝ කොහොමද?
(Halo! Kohomadha?)
Hello! How are you?

B: හොඳයි
(Hondhai)

🌼 Part 4 – Introducing Yourself

Vocabulary:

  • මම (Mama) – I / me

  • ඔයා (Oyaa) – you

  • මගේ (Mage) – my

  • ඔයාගේ (Oyaage) – your
  • නම (Nama) – name

  • රට (Rata) – country

  • වයස (Wayasa) – age

Question Examples:

  • ඔයාගේ නම මොකද්ද?
    (Oyaage nama mokadhdha?)
    What is your name?

  • ඔයාගේ රට මොකද්ද?
    (Oyaage rata mokadhdha?)
    What is your country?

  • ඔයාගේ වයස කීයද?
    (Oyaage wayasa kiiyadha?)
    How old are you?

Answer Examples:

  • මගේ නම Lisa.
    (Mage nama Lisa.)
    My name is Lisa.

  • මම ජර්මනියෙන්
    (Mama Germanyen.)
    I am from Germany.

  • මට විසි දෙකයි.
    (Mata wisi dhekai.)
    I am 22.

Extra Grammar:
To say “I am from…”, change the country to “-en”:

  • Amerikaawa = America

  • Amerikaawen = From America

  • Kaenadaawa = Canada
  • Kaenadaawen = From Canada


🌸 Part 5 – Likes & Dislikes

Basic Phrases:

  • මම කැමතියි… (Mama kaemathii…) – I like…

  • මම කැමති නෑ… (Mama kaemathi naae…) – I don’t like…

Examples:

  • මම කැමතියි කන්න.
    (Mama kaemathii kanna.)
    I like to eat.

  • මම කැමතියි පොත් කියවන්න.
    (Mama kaemathii poth kiyawanna.)
    I like to read books.

Using English verbs:

  • මම කැමතියි play කරන්න.
    (Mama kaemathii play karanna.)

Favorites:

  • මගේ කැමතිම කෑම rice and curry.
    (Mage kaemathima kaaema rice and curry.)
    My favorite food is rice and curry.

More Examples:

  • මගේ කැමතිම තැන Ella.
    (Mage kaemathima thaena Ella.)
    My favorite place is Ella.

  • මම කැමතිම activity එක hiking.
    (Mama kaemathima activity eka hiking.)
    My favorite activity is hiking.


🌿 Part 6 – Dialogue & Extra Grammar

New Words:

  • ගොඩක් (Godak) – a lot

  • ටිකක් (Tikak) – a little

  • මොනවද? (Monaadha?) – what? (plural)

  • …ද? (…dha?) – question particle

Examples:

  • මම ගොඩක් කැමතියි කන්න.
    (Mama godak kaemathii kanna.)
    I love eating.

  • මම ටිකක් කැමතියි සිංදු කියන්න.
    (Mama tikak kaemathii sindhu kiyanna.)
    I like singing a little.

  • ඔයා කැමතිද?
    (Oyaa kaemathiidha?)
    Do you like?
